New Podcasts on Smoking Cessation and Lung Cancer Highlights of 2011

March 16th, 2012 - by Dr. Jack West

http://blog.lungevity.org/2012/03/16/ne ... s-of-2011/

Here are a pair of podcasts completed several months ago. The first is by Dr. Mark Millard, Professor of Pulmonology at Baylor University and Medical Director of the Martha Foster Lung Care Center in Dallas, TX. In an exhaustive discussion, he covers how physicians can effectively discuss quitting with patients and how someone motivated to quit can use a wide range of tools to improve their chance of cure.

The second podcast I’d like to introduce now is the first part of Dr. Weiss’s summary of the highlights in the field of lung cancer in 2011. Because he covered so much ground in this presentation, we’ve divided it into several short pieces covering a few issues at a time. In fact, we’ll plan to produce our podcasts as shorter, easier to digest pieces in the future.

This first part covers therapies centered on the EGFR axis, including the EURTAC trial of the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) Tarceva (erlotinib) vs. conventional chemotherapy in European patients with advanced NSCLC and an activating EGFR mutation. This is followed by his summary of two different combinations of EGFR TKI and monoclonal antibody: one is the single-arm trial of afatinib with Erbitux (cetuximab) for patients with acquired resistance to EGFR TKI therapy after a good response, while the second is a randomized phase II trial of Tarceva with either MET-MAb, a monoclonal antibody against the target c-MET, or placebo.
