Hi all,
I've never been much of a "joiner", but then I've never had lung cancer before, either. I'm very much impressed by the members on this board & the support & caring they offer to everyone-pt. & caregiver alike.I have been blessed for the last 38 years to be married to Lyle who is my support & strength. Also, my daughter (gerbil Runner) & 3 of the coolest grandchildren you could ever meet.
I'm looking forward to knowing you all better & sharing my own experience with "the beast". Thanks for being there. Claire

Hi Claire and WELCOME! We sure do love to hear that word remission. I'm not much of a joiner either, but I really enjoy this site and everyone here. We learn a lot and help each other as much as we can.

God bless you,

Lost my Mother, My Maternal Aunt and Uncles, Maternal Great Aunts, numerous cousins to Adenocarcinoma with BAC or BAC only Lung Cancers. I am the third "...biopsy proven..." generation with Adeno with BAC. Not all family members afflicted with this disease were smokers or exposed to tobacco smoke. Paternal side of family remarkable for Pancreatic Cancer or Chronic and acute Pancreatitis as cause of death in everyone. BAC is also primary in the Pancreas, the only other organ besides Lung known to be a primary locus for Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma (BAC).
Researchers are looking into BAC as a possible bone cancer! Exciting news as I have had removal of Giant Cell Bone Tumors off and on since I was a young child. We were always told that my bone tumors were considered 'benign' because they were a very slow growing tumor and could take 20 or more years before they spread to other areas. I am paying special attention to the work out of the University of Ohio in Cleveland and hope that my children will keep up with the work being done there when I am gone. Their lives may depend upon what those folks learn over the next few years. These are the same researchers who found the location of the defective genes involved in the development of Lung Cancer in Non Smokers which are also the same genes involved in the development of some forms of Polycystic Kidney Disease, which I also have.
------------------------
Some other health issues I face:
Polycystic Kidney Disease with Multiple Organ Involvement; Benign Meningioma, Benign Left Adrenal Tumor, Giant Cell Tumors of the tendons and bone, Bilateral Mastectomies for pre-malignant Breast Tumors, many other benign tumors and cysts in the skin, veins, muscles and other organs; Sjogren's Syndrome, Crohn's-IBD with Hiatal Hernia and GERD, Rheumatoid Arthritis,
Ehlers-Danlos type connective tissue disorder, Degenerative Disc Disease of Spine. Heart Murmur.
Praying for One Smart Cookie and an Armadillo!

Welcome Claire!! I, like you, don't join in too many online support groups. In fact, this is the only one I have ever belonged to. I'm so glad that Jen got you to join in with us. You will find much support here. Wishing you the best on your upcoming treatments. (stem cell transplant, I believe)

In my thoughts and prayers~~~

Jan. 29,2004 Dad dx with squamous cell carc.
Feb. 5, 2004 Dad dx w/ stage IV w/ mets to spine

March 2, 2004 chemo started carbo/taxol
CT scan shows approx. 55% shrinkage in lung tumor!!!!YEAH!!!!

May 18 New CT scan of lungs and full body bone scan shows more shrinkage in the lung tumor. Spinal mets still present. Two more rounds of chemo, then Iressa, and radiation to the spine.

July 2004-New spot found in left lung. Dad started Iressa~~~praying that it works. Holding off on radiation to the spine for right now~~very little pain in the spine now.

September 2004- Chest CT shows stable disease in the lungs.

October 2004-Dad is now having pretty bad pain in his lower back. He is scheduled for a bone scan on Oct.26th. Still on Iressa. Taking Zometa monthly.

November 2004-Iressa is not working. Progression of disease in T12 and left hip. Seeing a radiation oncologist in two days for radiation to T12. Dad is set to start Alimta on Nov. 16th. Praying for a miracle~~~~~Did not star Alimta due to radiation of the spine and left hip.(14 treatments scheduled.

Dec.1, 2004-Scans revealed multiple mets to the brain. Given IV decadron imediately after scan.

Dec.2, 2004-Radiation onc. rec. WBR. WBR mask made. Will start 14 treatments of whole brain radiation. Progression of the disease found in other areas.(L/R adrenal glands, new tumors in the both lungs) Liver does NOT have tumors as we had first thought.

Dec.3,2004-WBR started. Dad had last radiation treatment to T12 and left hip.

Jan. 2005- Alimta started. Will probably have 3-4 infusions. Ct scan coming up end of January.

Feb.2005-Gemzar added to Alimta. Alimta alone is not working.

March 2005-Dad has some numbness in his face. Dr. believes that it is cancer in the spinal fluid. Lumbar puncture performed and a dose of chemo given directly into the spinal fluid. Still praying for a miracle.

March 2005--Lost my wonderful Dad. He will forever be in my heart.

Hi, Mom!

So glad you took the plunge!

BTW - my name refers to running on a treadmill. My mom is a terrific English Handbell ringer, which is how she chose her name. She's been a bellringer since I was in high school in several different groups.

Mom, Claire, has extensive sclc, met to pancreas
As of 12/9/03, brain and bone scans clear
Started CPT-11 and cisplatin
12/22 After 2 treatments, Mom sent to hospital with chemo reaction and staph infection
12/28 Mom home, will change chemo
1/5/04 Start carboplatin and vp-16
1/23/04 Blood clot in arm, but tumors have vanished from CAT scan!!!
2/18 Starting 25 doses of radiation to lung and pancreas
6/1 Clean PET scan - stem cells collected, but poor pulmonary function - must improve before proceding.
8/6 - confirmed radiation pneumonitis, possibly fibrosis.
8/26 New cardiologist, steroids are helping a lot. PET shows neck lymph node, onc. not worried. Hair growing back!
12/28 Still NED, but 2 hospital stays have sapped strength. Cardiomyopathy, fibrosis interfering with energy levels.
3/05 Three brain mets - WBR
4/24/05 Mom is so weak, we're all worried. May 2005 - it was anemia!
August 2005 - holding steady, but new vision problems are scary.
Sept. - after a brief rally, brain mets return - gamma knife on Oct. 19. Mom is very weak, bedridden.
November - Time is short. We spoil Mom as much as possible, and she seems content.
December 11th - Mom passed away peacefully. Dad, my aunt and I were at her side.

Welcome, Claire.

(Jen, my boy's newest favorite quote is an insulting one that he cracks up over "The wheel is spinning but the hamster's dead"... He saw it on a bumper sticker a couple of weeks ago...be CAREFUL out there on your wheel!)

My mother used to "clean my clock" when I was in school, but she never rang my bell!

Good to see you've joined, Claire. Friendship helps to fill the potholes in this journey.

xxoo,
Becky

Hi Claire--

Nice to finally meet you (almost said, "in person" but this isn't exactly "in person"--

Well you know what I mean.

Hope you can find the support here that you need.
