Okay, I hope no one takes this the wrong way..

Have any of you run into someone who you haven't seen for a while and they look at you like they've seen a damn ghost??

It happens now and then when I see someone I haven't seen in a year or two and they know that I had been diagnosed with lung cancer. There is like this unspoken question in the air, you can almost hear them thinking "You're STILL alive???".

Yesterday I ran into my old landlord's wife in a store and I swear, she actually looked like she saw a ghost. Her eyebrows shot up to her hairline and stayed there. She just stared at me and when she finally spoke, she said, in a surprised tone, "You look good???". This has happened to me before, in several different variations. Even when I go for my follow up with my Oncologist from hell, he looks at my reports and says, puzzled (and I swear to God, he has actually scratched his head while saying it), "wow, everything looks good".  (This, of course, was the same man who when he first saw me told me that I have a very aggressive cancer and it will be back). Yeah Dr., thanks for the vote of confidence, again!

Anyway, I'm not really complaining, I am glad to be here to surprise people! I was just wondering if anyone else has any ghost stories to report :) ..

Yes, Lucie gets this all the time, even from doctors other than her oncologists. For example, she sees her pulmonologist every three months or so and he just beams and marvels at her every time. We kinda like it and find it complementary, because it means she has beaten the odds. When we consider among our church family that the three women who had lung cancer diagnosed at the same time as Lucie are gone, we feel good about the label of "miracle lady". Don

I like it; like Don says, I find it complimentary.

I think I will, however, scare the hedouble toothpicks out of all the folks at my former workplace who assume I am deader than a doornail. I am sure that they think that I am long gone. Hoping that I am long gone. That way their consciences would be clear. I think that I might shake up their consciences again. Abandonment is cruel.

Hi Geri,

I could understand people who think they see a ghost as they are not informed like we are. To many of them think LC is a death sentence.

What shocks me is that you are 1A, and after 2 years the doctor is surprised that you are doing so well???I don't understand that. Maybe I am missing something here.

I am really confident that Joel will be okay as he is IB. He had his operation, the margins were clear, had the chemo. I am really not freaked about his upcoming CT at the end of the month. I just know it will be alright because I feel he should be. But maybe I am wrong and should worry.

Maybe this doctor should take a refresher course on LC 101.

Take care Geri,

Maryanne

Yes, I feel that way too sometimes. Not that the people are not very well intentioned, it's just that I think they were not expecting me to be around this long because of what they know and what they've experienced with others they know.

I think that's why I absolutely go crazy out of my way to look FANTASTIC whenever I go to a wedding, graduation, party or any other kind of get together where people know me. And it's probably not because of any way they treat me or don't treat me, it's all in my own head.

Anyhow, it feels good to be one of those who can be thinking, "Fooled you, didn't I?"

Debi,

That is so funny. What I hear all the time is "you look great". I've gained 15 lbs. since surgery. I guess they expected to see me skinny, pale and bald. I don't know... but I don't look great. :)

Oh, yes.....
While in the hospital last week I saw a woman I hadn't seen in several years. Her first response was "Oh my GOSH! You're STILL ALIVE!" I responded with "Yes, in spite of ALL of the screw ups I am still here."

Lost my Mother, My Maternal Aunt and Uncles, Maternal Great Aunts, numerous cousins to Adenocarcinoma with BAC or BAC only Lung Cancers. I am the third "...biopsy proven..." generation with Adeno with BAC. Not all family members afflicted with this disease were smokers or exposed to tobacco smoke. Paternal side of family remarkable for Pancreatic Cancer or Chronic and acute Pancreatitis as cause of death in everyone. BAC is also primary in the Pancreas, the only other organ besides Lung known to be a primary locus for Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma (BAC).
Researchers are looking into BAC as a possible bone cancer! Exciting news as I have had removal of Giant Cell Bone Tumors off and on since I was a young child. We were always told that my bone tumors were considered 'benign' because they were a very slow growing tumor and could take 20 or more years before they spread to other areas. I am paying special attention to the work out of the University of Ohio in Cleveland and hope that my children will keep up with the work being done there when I am gone. Their lives may depend upon what those folks learn over the next few years. These are the same researchers who found the location of the defective genes involved in the development of Lung Cancer in Non Smokers which are also the same genes involved in the development of some forms of Polycystic Kidney Disease, which I also have.
------------------------
Some other health issues I face:
Polycystic Kidney Disease with Multiple Organ Involvement; Benign Meningioma, Benign Left Adrenal Tumor, Giant Cell Tumors of the tendons and bone, Bilateral Mastectomies for pre-malignant Breast Tumors, many other benign tumors and cysts in the skin, veins, muscles and other organs; Sjogren's Syndrome, Crohn's-IBD with Hiatal Hernia and GERD, Rheumatoid Arthritis,
Ehlers-Danlos type connective tissue disorder, Degenerative Disc Disease of Spine. Heart Murmur.
Praying for One Smart Cookie and an Armadillo!

Yea, I hear you. I run into people all the time that just stare. They don't say it, but I know they're thinking, shi_, she's still alive and looks good. I get a great deal of satisfaction in telling them that yes, I feel good and look good. I'm not planning on going anywhere soon. So there.

I think it's what people don't say that says it all. Many people act like they want to run away from me! They say "you don't look sick." I say "well, you know, you can't judge a book by its cover!" There

10/31/05 - coughed up blood;went to EM, admitted to hospital;many tests including bronoscopy and pet scan confirmed diagnosis of nsclc.

1l/27/04, Surgery done to remove middle lobe and part of upper lobe right lung; was told stage la nslc, bronchoalveolar type. No chemo or radiation recommended.
Sent home on oxygen after 8 days in hospital.
2/04 - xray scan NED
6/04 - xray scan NED
6/30 - CAT SCAN - waiting for results on 7/7/05.

Have had problems since surgery such as:

Radiating pain up and down the outside of legs from hip to calf, burning of feet; swollen leg; excessive heartburn, bleeding gums, pain in hips and rectum area, cyst on thumb, red and flushed face and neck; nausea, dizziness, coughed up blood twice. All of the above has been addressed with doctors as follows, and told not of significance concerning lung cancer.

Primary care physician - who is an internist, 2 other internists; family doctor, Surgeon who did lung cancer surgery,2 Pulmonologists (regular and 2nd opinion,Orthopaedist,Neurusurgeon,Dentist,ENT.,Colerectal specialist,Accupuncturist,PhysicalTherapist,General Medical Doctor specializing in lumbar epideral steroid injections (had 2 so far).

I have had: lung cancer surgery, thumb surgery, dental surgery, one sacroiliac joint shot, 2 lumbar epidural steroid shots, accupuncture, xrays, cat scans, MRI of spine, bone scan, and ent checkup which resulted in a diagnosis of acid reflux.

Was told by surgeon that he removed part of one of my ribs "which was in his way" when he did surgery.

7-06 - Chest Xray - NED - Pulmonologist said I was "CURED"

11-06 - two-year anniversary from surgery; did chest xray - said "evidence of recurrent cancer."

Rest of November and December 2006:
Did cat scan - said metastatic cancer several places;

Did PET SCAN - lit me up like a Xmas tree

Did bronchoscope - unable to get tissue for biopsy

Did Mediastinoscopy surgery - took scrapings for biopsy; sent to pathologist; first part said negative; second part said waiting on slides

Results of slide said cancer - NOT NONSMAL......NOT RECURRENT....BUT new cancer called oat cell or SMALL CELL cell; mass in spine, and two in right lung close to area of surgery

This whole situation was unreal; finally got a diagnosis;

Went to oncologist; he ordered MRI of chest and of stomach and back, with and without contrast;

Results confirmed results of biopsy.

Onc went over treatment plan, which will be one per week for three weeks; one week off; repeat until two months; then will scan and see what's going on.

Had surgery again to put port in upper chest area to house the chemo

Onc said may do radiation after two months

Had first chemo treatment; first couple days no problem; after that, moderate nausea and tiredness;

12-28-06 - Second chemo treatment; drew blood, etc., am anemic, gave shot for that; so far, just very tired and some nausea;gave me antinausea medicine

2/13/07: Had 7th chemo treatment and change in medicine because other is not compatible with radiation and must have radiation on spine and other areas where thickening is and could recur there (I think that was what the onc said).

Scan results were good but not NED. Most tumors either gone or only thickening or shrunk except for spine which must be treated with radiation as does the other areas even though improved or gone.

I didn't take the best notes in the world or remember all he said because I was a nervous wreck to the point where even the onc asked me if I was nervous and I said yes, could I please take some notes and he waited a bit for me.

I go to chemo treatment again today and tomorrow, and for a shot to increase my white blood counts.

Waiting to see how all this comes out.

January 2007 to April 10, 2007
Have had severe side effects of chemo and radiation. Have had several shots for red cells and white cells; severe nausea, vomiting, trouble swallowing; had blood transfusion 2 pints; and iv liquids for dehydration. Also have really bad cough

Since last update, I have been through chemo, radiation to lung and then to brain as a precaution the doctor said. The radiation to my chest caused my esophagus to BURN REAL BAD, but doctor said was not burn but don't understand what he meant. I could not swallow, and even normal breathing was painful. Took the crap that numbs your throat, but instead of pain, I gagged and vomited, so had to dicontinue that. Meanwhile had dehydration and hospital for treatment; then low blood counts which ended up requiring a 2 pints blood transfusion. Meanwhile had and still have real bad cough; severe headaches when cough; doctor did not explain why and I don't understand why; coughing up green mucus which means infection; taking antibiotics for that; cough still bad; weakness and sometimes feel like I'm going to pass out, but so far have not. Taking all medicines doctors gave me.

Was supposed to go get a CAT SCAN OF BRAIN AND PET SCAN today but could not do so because of cough and infection and headaches; rescnheduled for next tuesday, hope ready by then.

Last scan showed "mass" on my left lung, which doctor said was {puzzling), because it is not in his opinion something that looks like small cell; remember I had non small cell originally; then this last one was small cell, and so now I HAVE A THIRD LUNG CANCER, can you believe this?:

Thanks for all your prayers and support. This is a wonderful place to come to for comfort and support.

My wonderful sister (who until my diagnosis I hadn't spoken to in about 3 years) kept quizing my children when she would see them (along with my ex-husband)about what was going on with me. she called me occasionally but I never told her too much. She was always the drama queen of our extended family (my father was one of 18 children!) and always gossiped about everyone. She told the "family" about my diagnosis, treatments, treatment failures, surgery and finally that I was a stage 4-inoperable LC patient(which was true at the time) and that I would certainly DIE and people should come and visit me very soon. she also began to contact a lawyer to adopt my children as my death was eminent. Well, now 4 years later I run into people all the time that honestly look like they have seen a ghost. You can read it on their faces "I thought she was DEAD". It is almost comical... they also say "wow, you look good" like it's the most impossible thing in the world to believe. What am I supposed to look like... bloated, bald, hospital gowned, trailing an IV pole behind me dripping Chemo into my brusied and swollen arms? Guess what world.. Cancer doesn't mean instant death... lots of people are living with cancer!!! I plan to live a whole lot longer... just to irritate my sister I think.

Havent yet had the experience, tho neighbors and relatives all ask "how you doin?" normal, I guess...

Anyway, if they keep treating u like a ghost, do like celebrities do, go out in disguise...get a real sick looking mask to wear when u got out in public..so youll look like they expect u too...

Course Im sure its not funny when that happens...and sorry it does...but Ill bet u handle it creatively, as u do most things..? Rich B.

06/28...Broncoscopy Mon....suspicious mass in left lung per ct scan...wish me luck...much anxiety, and yes, fear.
06/30...Needle biopsy, due to bronch. being inconclusive
07/02...dx is adenocarcinmoma...NSCLC

07/15...Surgery, entire left lung removed, No lymph node involvement or metasis yet discovered, so...hopeful prognosis
07/21 Home after sufficient recovery in hosp., slow recuperation, awaiting appt. with oncologist to determine if any additional treatment, screening, etc..
08/17/04 Oncologist appt....recomends more scans, CT bone, MRI, Pet etc. Also recomends one round of chemo...

9/17/o4 Good news, scans are all clear..NO evidence of disease detected...hopeful it remains that way. Remaining cautious tho, one more MRI to go and some adjuvant chemo....so waiting, healing, still doing med. appts for awhile. Then regular xrays ea. 3 mos.

Whoops...detour, the MRI/spine turned up a small lesion of unknown type. Off to the orthopedic specs. to investigate, get options. Chemo delayed briefly pending opinion from ortho guys.

Opinion is "not cancer" on spine...apparently just my arthritic joints...so, becomes a pain management issue..appt. made. On to adjuvant chemo on Monday. Finally.

Mon./10/27...o4 started adjuvant chemo finally; Taxotere first , then Cisplatin, I think...fatigued knocked me flat the 3rd day after...dozing, trying to catch my breath every time I move...sigh
Fri...emergency room, oxygen...Pneumonia-like inflammation of remaining lung...week of IV antibios and steroids...finally recovering, but...chemo ceased...end of that notion. Bad react. to taxotere. Now on to just screening scans for future. Continuing pain management consultations for back and surg. pain.

10/10/05 CT and PET scans; NED, clear, normal..1yr. out from treatment...cool.

2 yr. scans clear...wheww! SOB and easily fatigued tho, continues. Perm. I guess.
