About the Speakers

Jessica S. Donington, MD, MSCR, is an expert thoracic surgeon who treats the full spectrum of lung, esophageal, and mediastinal conditions. Her focus is on the comprehensive and multidisciplinary care of benign and malignant chest diseases.

Dr. Donington specializes in lung cancer and treats people at all stages, providing a personalized approach to diagnosis and treatment using the latest technology and innovations, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Donington is an avid researcher and respected leader in her field. Her research focus is in the discovery of novel biomarkers for early detection and treatment of lung cancer and clinical trials that incorporate surgery into multimodality care plans for locally advanced and metastatic lung cancer. Dr. Donington is a past president of Women in Thoracic Surgery and the New York Society for Thoracic Surgery and serves on the editorial boards of Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.

 

Marina Chiara Garassino, MD, is an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of thoracic malignancies. Dr. Garassino specializes in thoracic tumors including lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and small cell lung cancer, as well as thymic malignancies, very rare mediastinal tumors (tumors that develop between the chest and breastbone). Dr. Garassino understands that thoracic cancers can grow quickly, so she works with her patents to accurately diagnose their condition and find the right treatment(s) for each person.

As an avid physician-scientist, Dr. Garassino is committed to researching treatments and techniques that improve quality of care and outcomes for her cancer patients. She has led clinical and translational research focused on investigating targeted agents, immunotherapies to treat thoracic malignancies. Dr. Garassino has published over 220 papers in respected, peer-reviewed publications, including New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, and Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy.

 

Jacobi Hines, MD, is a joint adult hematology/oncology and clinical pharmacology/pharmacogenomics fellow at the University of Chicago. His clinical interest during his senior years of fellowship has been thoracic oncology, including non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, neuroendocrine carcinomas of the lung, and thymic malignancies. He has a special interest in the optimization of cancer immunotherapies and targeted therapies, including overcoming resistance and mitigation of treatment-related toxicities.

 

Aditya Juloori, MD, is an expert radiation oncologist who specializes in treating patients with lung, liver, and head and neck cancers. Dr. Juloori is committed to providing innovative therapies to his patients, including stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), a minimally invasive intervention that offers targeted radiation, minimizing injury to healthy tissue.

In addition to his clinical pursuits, Dr. Juloori is an avid researcher, evaluating treatments that can improve outcomes and enhance quality of life. He is investigating the synergistic effects of ablative radiotherapy and immunotherapy to find the best solution for each patient. Dr. Juloori is also passionate about clinical trial design, investigating the safety and effectiveness of his studies.

Dr. Juloori’s research has been published in several high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, and Physics, Practical Radiation Oncology, and Journal of Neurosurgery.

 

Maria Lucia Madariaga, MD, is a highly skilled thoracic surgeon who specializes in a wide range of lung conditions, including airway disorders, benign and cancerous esophageal disease, and metastatic tumors. Dr. Madariaga has particular expertise in treating patients with complex airway disorders, such as tracheal stenosis, tracheomalacia, and tracheal cancers, and performing lung transplants.

Dr. Madariaga also has extensive background in transplant immunology and large-animal research, and she is the principal investigator of the organ perfusion laboratory at the University of Chicago. Her research has been published in several highly respected, peer-reviewed journals, including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and American Journal of Transplantation.

 

Rajat Thawani, MBBS, is an assistant professor of medicine in the Section of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Chicago. His interests include translational oncology and clinical trials. His areas of focus are resistance to treatment in lung cancer, treatment of cancer and non-smokers and global oncology.

Rajat grew up in New Delhi, India, where he went to medical school. He completed his hematology and medical oncology fellowship at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon, where he was chief fellow.
