Closing the Loop: Sharing Research Results Back with the Lung Cancer Community

quote about research being a two way street between patients and researchers

Read time: 2 minutes.

When patients and caregivers participate in lung cancer research, they are generously offering their time, experiences, and personal stories to improve care for others. Yet too often, they never see the results of the studies they contribute to. This gap can discourage future participation and limit the diversity of voices represented in research.

That’s why the team behind Project PRIORITY co-created the EGFR Data Explorer, an online dashboard designed to share survey results back into the community. The dashboard makes research findings accessible and understandable to people living with EGFR-positive lung cancer and their caregivers.

By returning results, researchers acknowledge the vital role participants play in advancing knowledge and treatment. Patients and caregivers can use the data and findings from people “like them” to make more informed healthcare decisions. And when participants see the tangible impact of their involvement, they are more likely to stay engaged in future studies.

As Bellinda King-Kallimanis, PhD, Vice President of LUNGevity’s Patient-Focused Research Center explained when she presented this work at the 2025 World Conference on Lung Cancer, “There would be no major advancements to high-quality lung cancer treatment and care without the dedicated contributions from patients and caregivers.”

The EGFR Data Explorer shows how research can be a two-way street that honors contributions while empowering the community with knowledge.
