Comprehensive biomarker testing has transformed how lung cancer is treated by connecting patients with therapies that match the molecular profile of their tumors. Yet, for many people diagnosed with lung cancer, access to testing and understanding what the results mean remain significant challenges.
Far too often, patients miss out on potentially lifesaving targeted therapies because they are unaware of the importance of biomarker testing or lack guidance in interpreting results.
“It’s not enough for biomarker testing to be available,” said Upal Basu Roy, PhD, MPH, Executive Director of Research at LUNGevity Foundation. “It is important to know what these tests mean and how they shape the treatment journey.”
To bridge this critical gap, LUNGevity Foundation launched the No One Missed campaign to raise awareness and improve understanding of comprehensive biomarker testing among lung cancer patients. Through the MYLUNG Consortium, a partnership with the Sarah Cannon Research Institute, LUNGevity evaluated No One Missed educational materials—a kit including a short video and 4 brochures—in a real-world setting across six community cancer centers. The study, Project ENGAGE, assessed how exposure to No One Missed brochures and a short video influenced patient knowledge and confidence.
Preliminary findings, presented at 2025 JADPRO Live, are promising. Of the patients who received No One Missed materials, 40% reported being familiar with the term “biomarker testing” compared to 27% in the control group.
“These results show that simple, accessible education tools can make a measurable difference in patient understanding,” said Dr. Basu Roy.
The study reinforces the importance of embedding education within clinical settings. Most patients in the intervention group (77%) reported learning about biomarker testing directly from their clinics, compared to 53% in the control group.
Ultimately, this work demonstrates the power of targeted education to close gaps in cancer care. “Every patient deserves the chance to receive the right test, and the right treatment at the right time,” said Dr. Basu Roy. “Our goal is to make sure that no one is missed.”
