LUNGevity’s legislative policy work focuses on improving access to care across the lung cancer continuum and increasing funding for lung cancer research.

We address these priorities by engaging directly with legislators and their staff, writing or joining letters on key issues, and providing opportunities for advocates to interact with their elected officials. Our approach is highly collaborative, and we actively seek opportunities to work through coalitions or with individual partner organizations to amplify our shared goals.

LUNGevity Legislative Priorities

Alleviating the burden of utilization management practices, such as prior authorization and step therapy, that can unnecessarily delay critical care for patients

Eliminating deceptive insurance practices, such as copay accumulators and maximizers, that leave patients responsible for unexpected out-of-pocket expenses

Promoting access to care that is responsive to patient preferences, such as telehealth flexibilities

LUNGevity advocates for increased federal funding for lung cancer research at the National Institutes of Health (specifically the National Cancer Institute), as well as the Lung Cancer Research Program that is part of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs at the Department of Defense.

While most of our legislative activities are centered on Congress, we also advocate for state legislation on key issues for the lung cancer community. This includes increased access to biomarker testing and coverage for follow-up diagnostics with no cost-sharing for patients.
